Frank Ocean's Blonde - Album Review
Frank Ocean's "Blonde" is a flawlessly flawed masterpiece.
I wasn't sure about this album at first. I saw the feature credits and expected the greatest hip-hop album of all time. This was of course before I had ever listened to Frank. I was severely disappointed. Instead, I received this work of strange, vulnerable, unconventional R'n'b. It wasn't until several listens that I saw this album's true worth and genius. Frank's vivid, yet outlandish storytelling is on another level. The haze of a long summer night is slowly recognized. His lyrical references are right there with his storytelling. He frequently uses cars as a centerpiece in his stories.
His voice is soulful and possesses an unreal amount of emotion. This is complemented by equally hazy and soulful production. This album was worth the wait. Despite it's minimalist atmosphere, it actually holds a lot of substance. Every little nuance within the production helps build it and you notice something new with each listen. Frank's unconventional song structures make each track new and exciting. It's not your typical mainstream style of R&B. It's a breath of fresh air. A truly unique and ambitious project and one of the best of the past decade.
